Phase I: Keywords Optimization

The first phase for effective search engine optimization campaign is choosing relevant keywords or key phrases for your WebPages. Keywords are the words that user type in the search box to perform a searching process. The right keywords are those that clearly describe the aim of content that your website have.

Getting good position doesn’t depend upon targeted keywords infect it depends upon proper placing of these targeted keywords in your webpage and how many quality external links your webpage is getting. But if you have chosen wrong keywords then please replace them with appropriate targeted keywords because search engine will kick out your website if they found irrelevant keywords.

So let’s start with the homepage of your website. Look at the content of the homepage and put relevant keywords and key phrases according to the content placed in the homepage. Try to form three to four key phrases, since competition for key phrase is very fierce and it is very difficult to get a top position against one keyword or key phrase that your website have. So please choose at least three to four keywords or key phrases.

Difference between keywords and key phrases
Let’s suppose your website is providing tutorials service of php programming the targeted keywords in this scenario will be php, tutorials. But as you know normally people perform search using keyphrases so please put keypharase also in your webpage, especially in meta keywords tag. For the above example the relavent keyphrase for php tutorial website will be php tutorials, php scripts, free php tutorials. I hope no you have better understand the difference between keywords and keyphrases.

Once you have selected targeted keyphrases the next step is to check the demand of these keyphrases and then reselect the keyphrases according to the demand. We shall first check the demand of your selected keyphrases by going to Overture's Search Term Suggestion Tool:
http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/

Overture is a very popular pay-per-click search engine. You will then type each of the keyphrases that you selected, and see how many people search for those keyphrases. This tool will show you only those searches performed in Overture (and only in one month time). However, the relative popularity of each search term will be very similar in other search engines as well. In addition to telling you if your selected keyphrases are popular among the people, this tool will show you other keyphrases that you may not have thought about, which may even be more relevant and fruitful to your site.

Now the next step is to check how many competitors you have against your targeted keywords and keyphrases. Again goes to the above example of php tutorials website, there are lot of competitors against keyphrases like php tutorials, free php tutorials and advance php tutorials, so please try to create keyphrase other than these (Work on these too but if you want to get listed in the first page of search engine very soon then please also work over newley developed keyphrases) such as php tutorials websites, php programming, php tutorials world.

Having said that, get your list of keyphrases, go to Google and type-in each of them in the search box. Enter your keyphrases within quotation marks, and see how many results each individual query produces, making a note of those with a relatively small number of results (less competition). You will stick with the keyphrases that:

1. Best describes the content of your page.

2. Is a popular search term according to Overture's Search Term Suggestion Tool.

3. Generates a relatively small number of competitors after performing the Google search.

After thuis, you will put your selected keywords through out in the content of your webpage, but it is very best that the beginning of webpage must have targeted keywords. Place your keywords in heading tags, in title of webpage, in alt tags are plus points.

o You must make your page easy to navigate by the crawlers. Search engines heavily favor text over graphics and HTML over other flash, infect search engine hates flash.

o Use text heavily, especially in your navigation bar. Always try to avoid placing text in graphic format since the search engines won't be able to read it.

o Create a Site Map that includes all the web pages in your site, and place its link close to the top of the homepage. When the search engine follows the site map link, it will find and index all the pages in your site! So do follow this tip.

o Avoid frames. Search engines have trouble following them, search engines hates fame to crawl.

o Avoid Flash and JavaScript: search engines don't like either one. If you are using flash, make an HTML version of your site available to your readers and also to the search engines. If you use a JavaScript navigation menu, include an alternate text menu at the bottom of the web page, so it can be followed by the crawlers.

o If you are using a left navigation bar then it is plus point because the search engine will read it before the body of your page. Make sure you include your most important targeted keywords there, too.

o Make sure that all internal pages link to website’s homepage.

o Don't try to mention all your services in one page. It will really confuse the search engine.
This is pretty much all you have to do to make sure that your page is optimized for your chosen keywords. The next and final phase to increase your site's ranking is Off Page Optimization

Phase III (Off Page Optimization)
The last step is to make sure that you are getting backlinks from the best directories and from lots of quality sites with a topic related to your website. The best search engines, especially Google “visit" the web looking for links to your site. It's very simple. Follow these steps to get the quality links you need:

1. Getting listed in DMOZ:
The Open Directory Project (http://www.dmoz.org) is the world's largest and powerful directory. Being listed in this directory is important because it is used by Google and AOL to build their directories. To get listed is free, but it may take a lot of time, sometimes two weeks and some time few months to get listed, which can be a bit frustrating. However Open Directory Project listing can significantly increase your webpage PR in Google, so you must take the time to submit your site and do it right (list your site in the relavent category and strictly follow their submission rules and regulations). For how to get listed in the Open Directory website goes to: http://www.dmoz.org/add.html.

Always submit the articles in other websites who offer the services of articles submission. There are many web sites where you can publish articles in your field of expertise. This is a best way to establish yourself as an expert and to drive quality traffic to your web site. You must include your resource box at the end of your article. A resource box is a small paragraph that contains brief description of you and your business, where you must include a link to your site. This way, every time somebody picks your article and publishes it in their website or newsletter, your link will be there for readers and search engines to see, follow and crawl.

4. Exchanging links with reputable sites:
You should try to find quality sites that are relevant to your site's topic (not direct competitors), and ask the webmaster for link exchanging. This will give you highly targeted traffic and will improve your web page PR.
